Panel: A 4-Style Family from ps.type.lab

The Panel Family is a 4-style font ensemble originally conceived as a Monospaced design. The initial concept for the monospace was to juggle the idea of ‘constraint vs restraint’ and explore the concept of a typeface with lively personality in a fixed-width design space. The outcome of this exploration would be the starting point for what would snowball into the full family.
I love looking for the tension between conflicting ideas.
Panel exists because I wanted to play with the idea of
"constraint vs restraint." Could something with a rigid,
fixed-width also feel relaxed.

Panel Mono played a pivotal role in shaping the design decisions that influenced all four styles. To enhance open forms, specific letters like 'c' and 's' had their serifs removed.
This created an ambiguity that allowed for a harmonious relationship between the serif and sans-serif designs. This resulted in a set of shared glyphs that remained consistent across the mono styles. The introduction of italics was seen as an opportunity to push the fluidity of the forms even further, with cursive influences in the lowercase letters infusing the fonts with liveliness.

Each style contains over 500 glyphs covering nearly 200 Latin based languages making the fonts highly useful around the globe. If you or your client need language support that is not yet covered feel free to reach out and we can discuss options for customization.
A reliable set of 5 weights was designed for each style. The variable fonts allow for nearly endless possibilities and custom instances. Grab the Variable Fonts Here.
Style Points
"Ball"ternates: a stylistic set in the mono italic that utilizes open loop ball terminals in the
2 lightest weights. When the counter space becomes too small, they enclose like a traditional ball terminal.
Once the monospaced designs were dialed in, it made perfect sense to introduce a proportional set to complete the family. This also provided an opportunity to adjust key glyphs that often struggle within the constraints of a fixed-width format. Letters like 'M' and 'W,' with their natural width, were allowed to breath. The goal for the proportional sets was to retain many of the distinctive attributes of the monospaced designs and make adjustments only where necessary.
The complete family now encompasses four unified styles, offering a versatile collection of 40 fonts. Each style includes a reliable range of weights, from light to black.
